That’s how critics have described White Christian nationalism, a deviant strain of religion that has infected the political mainstream. But there is another cost to the spread of White Christian nationalism that no one mentions. The relentless coverage of White Christian nationalism is spreading a racist myth: that Whiteness is the default setting for evangelical Christianity. In a February 2023 survey, nearly two-thirds of White evangelical Protestants qualified as sympathizers or adherents to Christian nationalism. A Russian video apparently seeking to recruit US spies is circulating on Telegram. The video was in response to the CIA's latest attempts to recruit Russian spies on Telegram. The Russian video seems to show members of the US military and contains a clip from "Jarhead," a 2005 film about a disillusioned US Marine. A still from a Russian propaganda video apparently aimed at recruiting spies show President Joe Biden in crosshairs. The US seems keen to recruit Russians opposed to the Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine, which has stalled amid steep casualties for the Russian military.

But they also exposed a darker side of Christian nationalism that was always there, experts say. Americans who support Christian nationalist ideas may not identify as Christian nationalists. Andrew Whitehead, a sociologist at IUPUI and co-author of "Taking America Back for God: Christian Nationalism in the United States," has found similar connections between Christian nationalism and antisemitism. Because while some of last week’s election results are still being tabulated, one thing is certain: Abortion was a clear winner. Across the country, many voters named abortion as their top or second most important issue in exit polls. Of course ensuring everyone has legal, affordable access to abortion care in our communities is front of mind. White nationalists use abortion as an issue to divide white Christian voters and oppress people of color seeking reproductive freedom and health care. We’ve had pro-choice majorities before, but pro-choice leaders placed abortion on the back burner, believing it wasn’t in jeopardy.
